Playing, Exhausting and retaining Ethereal cards

Ethereal removes a card left in hand at the end of the turn by Exhausting it. That rule does not mean the card must Exhaust whenever played. Read any additional Exhaust keyword separately. A playable Ethereal card can perform its effect and later return through normal cycling if no other rule removes it.

Pagestorm draws an additional card when an Ethereal card is drawn. Spirit of Ash grants Block when an Ethereal card is played. Pull from Below gains damage from Ethereal cards played during the combat. Leaving a card in hand until it Exhausts does not count as playing it for the latter two effects.

Ethereal card sequencing

Parse supplies draw and has Ethereal. Sculpting Strike can add Ethereal to another card in hand. Those cards can support the package without requiring every rare payoff to appear. The value depends on whether the card was drawn with the keyword, played with it, or merely left behind at turn end.

For example, adding Ethereal to a card already in hand does not retroactively create a Pagestorm draw trigger for that draw. It can make the card eligible for Spirit of Ash when played afterward. This distinction prevents a common sequencing mistake: expecting the addition of a keyword to replay an event that has already happened.

Veilpiercer can make the next Ethereal card free in energy. Choose the intended card before using another eligible one. A discount on the wrong card may leave the expensive payoff unplayable. More draw is useful only while the hand has the resources to use what it finds.

Undeath and copy control

Undeath grants Block and puts a copy into discard. A player-developed package adds Ethereal through Sculpting Strike, then uses Pagestorm to keep finding the resulting copies and Pull from Below as damage. The interaction offers control over whether copies are played again or left to disappear through Ethereal.

Do not turn that example into a rule to play every copy forever. Playing more Undeaths creates more cards competing with the finisher’s draw. When defense is already enough, letting an unnecessary Ethereal card Exhaust can improve later access. That choice gives up its immediate play trigger, so compare the Block needed now with the hand the deck will need later.

Avoid the all-Power opening

Pagestorm and Spirit of Ash require setup, while Pull from Below needs prior plays before it becomes a large attack. A hand containing all the payoffs and no useful draw can still fail. Keep ordinary defense, Osty support or Soul generation when those actions solve the first turns.

An upgrade reducing Pagestorm’s energy cost can improve setup. Increasing a damage payoff does not solve an opening hand unable to play its first defensive card. The strategy works through the timing of separate events, not merely by collecting the largest possible number of Ethereal cards.
