Soul generation and Exhaust
Soul is a zero-energy Skill that draws cards and Exhausts. It accelerates a turn, but the copy does not return on the next reshuffle. The engine therefore needs generation, not just one early Soul and an expectation of endless cycling.
Grave Warden adds Block while placing a Soul into the Draw Pile. Capture Spirit and Reave provide other routes to generation. Severance distributes Souls among several piles, including the hand. Check the destination on each card: a Soul placed into the Draw Pile is not an immediate draw effect already in hand.
Haunt setup
Haunt causes an enemy to lose HP when a Soul is played. Devour Life supplies Summon from Soul plays. If the hand contains a persistent payoff and several Souls, establish the Power before spending the draw sequence when it is safe to do so. Playing all Souls first and the Power afterward cannot recover those missed triggers.
These Powers have setup costs. Taking a second payoff when the first is already enough can slow the initial deck cycle. Another generator or a dependable defensive card may improve more hands than another effect waiting for a Soul that has not yet been created.
Draw and Energy requirements
A Soul can reveal an expensive attack or Power without giving the energy needed to play it. Count the remaining energy before drawing through the whole hand. Dirge spends an energy budget to generate Summon and Souls, so playing it immediately can leave later draws unusable that turn.
Death March rewards the number of cards drawn during the turn. Soul Storm rewards Souls in the Exhaust Pile. These payoffs look related but measure different things: one cares about this turn’s draw, the other about previously spent Souls in the combat. Choose the attack that the deck can support at the moment it is drawn.
Hybrid turns and upgrades
Oblivion can turn a high-card-count turn into Doom applications. That gives the draw engine another route to damage without replacing Haunt. It still requires the chosen target and defensive timing to make sense.
Upgrades that improve generation, reduce an important setup cost or strengthen the attack used every cycle can all be reasonable. Do not upgrade a payoff merely because it is rare when the deck’s failure is finding the first defensive card.
Keep an ordinary attack and Block plan for hands without the engine. A compact Soul package can improve an Osty or Doom deck even when no full collection of Soul Powers appears.
The launch Soul loop
The March 2026 Soul-loop account used zero-cost Borrowed Time with a self-Doom payment. Current Borrowed Time costs one Energy and taxes later cards for the turn. The historical study explains that changed resource budget; the present-day build still needs renewable generation, card access and a damage payoff.
