Filtering versus gaining cards
Prepared draws one card and discards one. The upgrade draws two and discards two. Neither version simply adds that many usable cards to the hand: you played Prepared itself and must still make the discards. Its value comes from replacing unwanted cards and triggering effects that care about discarding.
With Sly cards in hand, a discard can become a free play rather than a lost action. That makes the choice of discard part of the turn’s damage and defense. Without useful discard targets or a card worth searching for, another Prepared can be a weak reward even though it costs no energy.
Read the rest of the hand first. A needed defensive card may be a poor discard even if it enables an offensive effect. Statuses and Curses can be useful filtering targets when another card in hand already handles the turn.
Battle Trance and Fiddle restrict drawing, so Prepared cannot supply its normal access under those restrictions. Discard support does not need to be the deck’s entire strategy: Steam players describe using it alongside Poison or Shivs, rather than forcing every reward toward a separate Sly archetype.
