Strength and hit count
Strength adds damage to attacks. A card that hits several times can receive that increase on every hit, which makes Twin Strike and Sword Boomerang useful partners for Inflame. This is different from playing an expensive attack whose damage is concentrated into one hit. Compare the actual number of hits and their targeting before choosing a finisher.
Bash supplies Vulnerable as well as damage. When the energy budget permits both, apply Vulnerable before spending the rest of the turn on attacks. Uppercut offers another way to combine an attack with enemy debuffs. Paper Phrog improves the payoff from maintaining Vulnerable; it does not supply that status by itself.
Early rewards and upgrades
A multi-hit card that clears current enemies is a reasonable starting point even before Strength appears. It can solve an immediate damage problem while keeping this direction open. Inflame is a more compact setup than Demon Form, whose recurring Strength is most relevant when a fight lasts long enough to use it.
Upgrade the card that changes the coming fights. More Strength benefits several attacks; improving an important attack can instead make the first cycle stronger. Do not spend every rest site upgrading damage if the next boss is likely to require healing or a defensive improvement.
Defense and consistency
Shrug It Off adds Block while moving through the deck. Draw is important because a hand containing only scaling and starter attacks can leave the desired combination separated across turns. Offering accelerates a turn at an HP cost; count that loss alongside incoming damage before using it.
Shuriken rewards repeated attacks. It fits an attack-heavy turn, but a relic should not persuade you to play an unnecessary attack instead of preventing lethal damage. Red Skull is conditional Strength, not an instruction to remain at dangerous health.
Area damage and pivots
Sword Boomerang splits hits randomly, so it can struggle to remove a specific threat in a group. Whirlwind supplies area coverage when the energy budget supports it. A focused damage package can coexist with an Exhaust engine or a few stronger defensive cards.
If scaling is already sufficient, prioritize the missing answer: reliable Block, earlier access to Inflame, or area damage. Another finisher is often less useful than making the existing attacks available on the right turn.
Northernlion’s recorded A8 win
Northernlion’s May 2026 run combines Strength, Vulnerable and Energy support in the winning climb. Its final boss sequence includes a duplicated Demon Form setup. The annotated study separates that historical recording from current costs, including the HP payment on Bloodletting and the defensive cards that still need Energy after setup.
